With a Heavy Heart…
November 25, 2019
To our many friends and supporters —
It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that Express Yourself Milwaukee will close at the end of this year. We do not have the ongoing infrastructure necessary to support the organization.
Since we opened our doors in 2003, countless vulnerable youth have benefitted from our unique approach of using expressive arts – music, drumming, dance, spoken word and visual art – to begin healing from trauma.
Today I reflect with honor and gratitude on what Express Yourself Milwaukee was able to achieve:
- Our youth engaged in the creative process and discovered healthy ways to be seen and heard.
- Our youth uncovered inner strength and resilience as they stepped up to creative challenges throughout the years.
- Our youth experienced belonging and connection through successful collaboration on artistic projects showcased at community events and the annual shows.
- Our youth who rarely received positive feedback in their daily life were able to experience being applauded onstage and in front of their friends and family.
My colleagues and I are grateful for the support you’ve provided over the years.
With deep appreciation,
Lori Vance, Founder and Executive Director
